Every new homeowner purchases a house they fall in love with. With big dreams to make it their own. You hear people talk about replacing the flooring, and see on social media they painted the walls wild colors to match their personality. When you come over to visit they parade you around the kitchen to show you the oh so modern appliances they bought.
When was the last time someone snap chatted you a picture of their new roof?
We’ve all been there so I get it. You want to make the house feel like home. But, as an outsider who doesn’t live in your home. We see everything you don’t. You’ve neglected to repair that bent downspout. Yeah, it makes your home look cheap. The color of your house is still yellow and so are your two neighbors. When I come over to visit I have to read the mailbox carefully because I forget which one is your house. They all look the same. As a roofing owner, I’m not going to lie, I sneak a peak at your roof and wonder how high your utility bills are because you don’t have the proper ventilation for the size of your home. As I study the exterior of your home to help me remember your house from the neighbors I notice quite a few wood pecker holes in your siding and soffit. Hopefully you do not have squirrels running around in your attic.
It’s important to do exterior maintenance!
- Extend the life of your home
- Prevents the development of serious problems
- Maintains your home’s energy efficiency
- Saves you money in the long run (nothing like paying for a brand new roof when you could have just paid for a repair)
5 excuses why homeowners focus on the interior of their home FIRST, instead of the exterior that EVERYONE sees.
- I have to live in this house so I want to focus where I spend the most time.
Increasing the curb appeal of your home will directly reflect on you and when you plan on selling it, it will help increase potential buyers interest. If the house looks drab on the outside many people will assume so does the inside. - The inspector said I have about 5 years left on my roof. I’m good for 5 years.
Just because you think you have 5 years is not a reason to neglect addressing your roof. Contact a professional roofing company in your area to plan what it will take to replace your roofing system. Do you know how much it is going to cost? Will you need to start saving? Will this mean you will need to wait to purchase that new boat you’ve always wanted? Do you want to replace your roof with the same material? Asphalt shingles are not the only shingle out there anymore. Take the time to do your research so you are not shocked, or put into a time crunch because you’ve neglected to address your roof before it becomes a problem. - No one cares what the outside looks like.
WRONG! Everyone who drives by your house cares! Your mailman, your kids, your friends, your kids friends parents, etc! People are human, they form opinions, then tend to size you up before they really get to really know you. It’s true, even the best intended person can easily form a negative opinion just by looking at your house. “Maybe they are tight on money right now” “Are these parents ever home?” “Those are the weirdo people with the ugly house on the corner” - I’m not a contractor, I have no clue where to begin.
Well I’m not a doctor, but that doesn’t mean I won’t go visit one if there is something wrong with me. It’s okay to have no clue what you need to do about all those holes in your soffit, or how to go about replacing that bent downspout that is basically useless right now. What is important is that you find someone who does! You have limitless ways to find professionals in your area too! Do a google search, ask your friends or family who they used, do a Yelp search, or call Resistance Exteriors LLC if you live in Southeastern Wisconsin (wink wink). I suggest reading a few reviews, or getting a personal recommendation from someone. It’s a lot safer than dialing the first number you see in the yellow pages, you never know who you are going to get to show up. - We can’t afford to remodel the exterior right now.
Did you do your research? Is this really the case? Do you even know what a new roofing system costs? Did you ask the local painting how much he would charge to paint your home? If you don’t do your research before hand, you’ll never know how much money you should be putting aside for the projects you want to tackle in the future.
